Scott Olsen returned unscathed from two tours in Iraq only to be critically wounded during a violent confrontation between police and Occupy Oakland protesters Tuesday night.
His supporters, many of whom are also Iraq war veterans, say he was struck in the head by a police projectile and sustained a two-inch fracture to his skull. Oakland's interim police chief Howard Jordan told reporters Wednesday evening that he does not know what caused Olsen's injuries but that the incident is under investigation.
By 10 a.m. Thursday morning Olsen had been upgraded to fair condition at Oakland's Highland Hospital. His roommate, Keith Shannon, who served with him in the Marines, said Olsen will need surgery once his condition is stabilized.
