How to Dress to Flatter for Your Body Type

Every woman is built differently, so it’s difficult for certain women to find advice on how to dress for their body type. However, there are common body shapes that women can take as a template for their body type, making it easier to find advice and dress in a way that is flattering, comfortable, and fashionable. The five template body shapes are the rectangle figure, the pear figure, the apple figure, the athletic figure, and the hourglass figure.

Finding out which of these body shapes best describes you will help you not only dress better but also helps you feel more comfortable in your own body by allowing you to select clothing that benefits you. Continue reading to learn about all the different body shapes and the type of clothing that works best.

  • Rectangle Figure – This simply means that your bust and hip size are close to the same measurements. This body shape is best accompanied by clothing that adds volume to your upper body. For example, puffy sleeves will help accentuate your subtle curves.
  • Pear Figure – This shape signifies that your hips are wider than your upper body. This body type is best accented by using a one-color palette. It creates a leaner image. Women can also use skirt dresses to help bring everything together.
  • Athletic Figure – Also known as a triangle or wedge figure, the athletic figure features a wider torso than the hips. Strapless tops, halter necks, and off-the-shoulder style tops help accent this body shape.
  • Apple ShapeThis body type is best paired with clothing that doesn’t cling to the body. Find clothing that sits loosely against the body without sagging too much. Certain fabrics, such as silk and high-quality cotton, are best for this body shape.
  • Hourglass ShapeYou will know if you have an hourglass shape if your torso and hips are the same sizes, but your waist is much smaller. Embrace your curves with tight clothing and long dresses. High-waisted pants are another great option for women with an hourglass shape.

Blending Professionalism With a Flattering Look

You don’t have to sacrifice style for the workplace. Once you understand your body shape, you will be able to select professional clothing that doesn’t sacrifice comfort and style.

For example, under scrub long sleeve shirts can help define your shape while wearing professional attire. An under-scrub shirt will stop your scrubs from clinging to your body, creating an unflattering look. The undershirt will also help define your body type, allowing your curves to shine through even through a set of scrubs.
