How Is US Government Dealing With COVID-19

When it comes down to dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, Trump administration is being constantly criticized for their non-serious attitude and delayed response. According to research published by Forbes, the United States government response was not only slow but also a bit careless. The Government could have done better and contained the number of deaths. Another source claims that President Trump did not take the pandemic seriously and was angered by the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) initial warnings.

President Trump did not only overlook the warnings of a pandemic but also ignored the mitigation plans developed by the White House’s Corona Virus task force and CDC. Had the President been a bit more cautious and paid heed to the informing agencies, America could have prevented itself from damage in terms of both, the lives lost and the economic setback.

After the virus’s spread and rising death toll, the President started taking this pandemic more seriously and took the following steps to counter this deadly pandemic.

COVID-19 Measures Taken by the Trump Administration

Before diving into the details, it is important here to note that the first American death due COVID-19 took place on 29th February. In March, the pandemic had spread like fire across various states and many states had started taking social distancing measures. These included closing down theme parks and public hangout places, the closing of schools and cancellation of social gatherings, and postponement of primary elections in various states in an attempt to flatten the COVID-19 curve.

In April, all major political parties also adopted the safety measures and canceled their public events and chose to host them via audience-free platforms instead of on-ground ones. During this time period, the Trump administration came up with a COVID-19 combat action plan and took the following steps.

  1. Suspending Social Activities: The first step is taken Trump administration was the suspension of social activities and the imposition of a partial lockdown in its various states. Though this led to some setbacks in terms of economical performance it did help in controlling the spread of deadly pandemic any further.
  2. Spreading Information and Busting False Myths: Post the suspension of activities, the Department of State took it upon itself to establish websites and other portals through which the citizens could be kept informed about the severity of COVID-19 and how to prevent its spread. This also included the provision of the right kind of information and busting popular myths circulating on social media.
  3. Rescuing Americans Overseas: Since the onset of this pandemic, flight operations got suspended worldwide and this led to many Americans being stuck in other countries. The Department of State stepped into this area and established resources for brining American citizens back home without delay while enforcing proper safety measures. Additionally, the Department has also established helpline numbers for overseas Americans to get in touch with the help centers. These include the following phone numbers:
  4. 1 (888) 407-4747 (U.S. and Canada)
  5. 1 (202) 501-4444 (overseas)

Other than these, stranded Americans are advised to contact their local United States’ Embassies in case they are not able to get in touch via these helplines.

  1. Ensuring Workplace Safety for the Department of State Employees: The United States Department of State has adopted effective safety measures under the guidelines laid down by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centre for Disease Control and Protection (CDC) to safeguard the health of its employees.
  2. Travel Advisories for US Citizen Travelers: The Trump administration has set up a Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for US Citizen Travelers to keep them informed about the updates on the pandemic and how they can reach back home safely. This program also involves educating the Americans traveling overseas about safety measures to be observed while traveling for making informed decisions.
  3. Providing Aid To Foreign Countries To Combat The Crisis: The United States is also providing foreign countries with financial aid to help them combat the after-effects of this pandemic. It is doing so not only through government-run generations but also with the donations of common Americans.
  4. Implementation of the CARES Act: To help small businesses, employees, and people who suffered an economic setback in the times of corona, the Government has established the CARES Act and is overseeing the process of its implementation.
  5. Coronavirus Tax Relief: The Trump administration is also providing tax relief to industries, businesses, and individuals who have been hit hard by the ongoing crisis via the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) department.
  6. Framework for Opening America Again: In addition to all of the above, Trump’s administration has set up Guidelines for Reopening America post the COVID-19 pandemic in association with CDC.
  7. White House Coronavirus Task Force: Last but not the least, Trump administration set up a Coronavirus task force in the White House to deal with people’s queries and provide them relief in all possible ways.

Many people believe that President Trump had ignored COVID-19 in its initial stages and did not take the necessary steps at the right time to prevent the spread. However, him taking the above-mentioned steps is a series of good steps to combat this pandemic. The lasting period of this pandemic cannot be predicted by anyone.

At some point, the United States economy will have to go back to its normal routine and people will have to come out of the isolation to pursue their day jobs. The effectiveness of the guidelines developed to help in the Reopening of America after the lockdown period will reveal itself when the time comes.

It will be presumptuous to deduce anything based on those guidelines before they are actually enforced and their results are observed. Till then, Americans rely heavily on the grants provided through the CARES Act to people who have suffered economically during this pandemic and stay indoors to save their lives.
