You might be playing a multiplayer game like COD or GTA V from Epic games, but msvcp140.dll is missing is preventing from launching the game. Msvcp140.dll is missing is a common error that occurs in many machines, and you can solve it using official solutions.

What is msvcp140.dll is missing?

We can prevent the problem if we understand what is causing the msvcp140.dll error. Many games were designed to work on Windows machines, and the developers are using the advanced Visual Studio program to built its backbone. Game developers use C++ language to craft the game, and that’s where Visual Studio comes in handy.

The MSVCP140.dll is a core component of the Visual C++ Redistributable package. Missing files are common in Windows 10 PC, and there are many reasons why it occurs in the first place. We have to dig deeper into the matter to find out the culprit and solve it to prevent the “The program can’t start because msvcp140.dll is missing from your computer” error.

PC Threats

Windows is plagued with tons of viruses, malware, adware, spyware, and others. Unfortunately, it is not possible to escape them all because the invaders are finding new loopholes to create an opening in the machine. Your PC might have infected with some form of virus or malware, which is modifying the files in the background and causing problems.

The best way to keep your PC clean is to conduct a full computer scan.

You can use free solutions like Avast Free Antivirus & Malwarebytes. Of course, you are not sponsored by any of the companies to promote it, and we are suggesting it because that’s what we are using right now.

Windows Defender or Windows Security is not consistent and that’s one of the contributing reasons why the software is infected by threats. Clean out the infected files from the machine and bring them back to the normal state.

Scan System Files

No one should take missing DLL files because it could also mean that the operating system has corrupted system files. Do not assume that your copy of Windows can’t be the victim of corrupted system files. Fortunately, Microsoft introduced inbuilt tools to identify the corrupted files and fix them, if possible.

Step 1: Press Windows Key + S and then open CMD as administrator.

Step 2: Command Prompt window will open and type “sfc /scannow” and press enter button to begin the process.

Step 3: Let the scanning process take its time because it is faster on SSD, while it is slower on HDD.

Don’t lose patience and close the window because this is an important task, and you should let Windows check the system files.

Note: Close all background running programs and stop working in the background until the scanning process is finished.

Step 4: Windows found corrupted system files and fixed them.

  1. Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. (NO PROBLEMS)
  2. Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. (FIXED!)
  3. Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. (WORST)

The third result is the worst-case scenario, and we suggest the readers install a fresh copy of Windows on the machine. I have to say that Windows had corrupted system files in one week old Windows machine, so don’t be surprised if your machine lands in a similar scenario.

Install Visual C++ Redistributable

The “msvcp140.dll is missing” is a C++ redistributable package error, so we have to install the package again.

You can go to Control Panel > Uninstall programs to check whether “Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable” is installed or not.

If it is present in the machine as an installed program, and then you have to uninstall it from the Windows PC. However, you have to take a snapshot of the package because it may help you later on.

Step 1: Go to the official Microsoft page. (An alternative link for MS Visual C++ 2015 – 2019 package for CS:GO, GTA V, Apex Legends and more)

Step 2: Click on “Download” in the preferred language, and we have selected “English”.

Step 3: Choose x86 & x64 or choose both and then click on “Next” to continue.

Step 4: Run the x86 set-up as administrator and install it.

Step 5: Run the x64 set-up as administrator and install it.

Restart the Windows machine to end the session and start a new session with the machine. Remember, you can always uninstall the installed packages, and you cannot avoid x86 or x64 because both MS Visual C++ 2015 packages are needed in this case.

Re-install Program or Games

All registered programs have the C++ Redistributable package in the installer itself, and you can make the most of it. You have to uninstall the program and reinstall it because the program or game will remove the old package & install a fresh package.

Step 1: Press Windows Key + I to open “Settings”.

Step 2: Click on “Apps” to continue.

Step 3: Click on “Apps & features” to continue.

Step 4: Click on the program or game and uninstall it.

You can do the same from the Steam, Origin, Blizzard, Epic Games, and other game stores. All game stores have advanced uninstallers that will remove redistributable packages from the Windows PC. You can use the game stores to re-install the games without hindrance.

System Restore

Microsoft added the System Restore feature in Windows OS so users can restore the machine to an earlier point. You can bring back the missing msvcp140.dll files, and we will show you how you can find out whether it will make any difference or not.

Step 1: Press Windows Key + S and search for “Create a restore point” and click to open it.

Step 2: A new window will show up on the screen, and click on “System Restore” to continue.

Step 3: Another window will show up on the screen, and click on “Next” to continue.

Step 4: Select the available restore point and then click on “Scan for affected programs” to continue.

Step 5: A new window will pop-up, and you can find all programs that have been affected by the System Restore.

A. The first section will tell you what’s being removed from the machine-like programs, games, updates, and driver updates.

B. The second section informs what will be present in the machine.

For example, Apex Legends 5th edition is the current version then the system restore will take the Apex Legends back to the 4th edition. System restore will revert all the new changes that occurred in recent times, and it will have Time & Date so you can make up your mind.

Step 6: Click on the restore point and then click on “Next” to proceed further.

Step 7: A pop-up will show up, and click on ”Finish” to begin the process.

Your Windows machine will reboot and land in the System Restore sequence. The restoring process takes less than ten minutes on machines with SSD installed and longer for HDD users. Do not interrupt the restoring process by turning off or unplugging the power cable.
