Error Code 0x80004005: Windows error 0x80004005 that occurs when opening a file, folder, or pasting a file in a drive, shared folder, virtual machines and furthermore. The error occurs when Windows Update fails to install the latest updates. Unfortunately, the error 0x80004005 does not provide in-depth information on the subject, so it turns out difficult to process a solution for it. 3. The error 0x80004005 originates when administrator pastes a copied file that was deleted a few moments ago.

1. Clean Registry Files

Unused registry files remain in the system files for a longer period, and nothing is going clear to them automatically. Windows PC administrators step forward and learn to clear old installation files, junk files, and registry files. Not everyone born with the knowledge to wipe & clean a computer, so I’m going to guide the readers.

Step 1: I’m using CCleaner or almost eight years now, and it does come in handy to wipe out unnecessary junk from a PC. It supports Windows XP to the latest edition of Windows 10. Install the program and fire up for a cleaner PC.

Step 2: Click on the registry icon located in the left sidebar. You got one option available in the section & click on “Scan for Issues”.

Step 3: The program consumes one or two minutes to complete the process. When a number of registry files appear in the results, then click on “fix selected issues” and then click on “Fix all selected issues.

Remember, I skipped a few options in the tutorial such as creating a backfile of the before deleting registries. I inform the readers that the deleted files are removed from the PC and you cannot recover them. I did not face any major problems after using CCleaner, and it always increased performance instead.

2. Corrupted System Files

Windows system files are prone to corruption and it frequently happens on 5/10 computers. I recommend running an in-depth scan to detect & fix the files from the Windows PC. In Windows 10, you for an option called “SFC SCAN” that allows administrators to check for corrupted system files. You don’t have to download & install third-party programs to complete the task and it is a CMD (Command Prompt) task.

Step 1: Press Windows Key + S for search bar, and type “CMD or Command Prompt” and then run as administrator.

Step 2: The Command Prompt window will show up on the screen and then click on “SFC/scannow” and hit enter to begin. The process will begin and it starts at 1% and ends at 100% and you have to remain patient throughout the scanning. I recommend ending background applications and keeping the PC idle throughout the session.

Step 3: The file verification phase ended at 100% leaving several corrupted files unrepaired.

The inbuilt corruption scanning tool will provide accurate information whether it has found corrupted files or not. In a few scenarios, the inbuilt SFC SCAN tool will provide log files, if it could not repair the corrupted files. I have made a bootable USB drive to freshly install Windows 10 latest edition, and that’s an ultimate solution.

3. Open the File and Folder Troubleshooter

Above, I have mentioned about Copying, Pasting, and Deleting part and Microsoft’s “File and Folder Troubleshooter” can fix the system errors. Microsoft developed a dedicated program that isn’t part of the Windows official release.

Step 1: Download 1MB file & launch it, and then click on “NEXT” to proceed.

Step 2: The program will go through known problems and errors.

Step 3: If the program couldn’t figure out the problem, then select one option from it, and then click on “NEXT.”

Step 4: I have selected “others or I don’t know” and the scenario might be different in your case.

Step 5: Read the notification carefully, and then click on “Yes” or “No.”

Step 6: The troubleshooter will inform about the fixes or if it couldn’t resolve the issue.

I recommend restarting Windows PC after completing the process.

The performance of Windows machine may seem weird at the beginning, but it will go back to the normal state in a few moments. By using the files & folder troubleshooter, the performance won’t be affected or settings will not change whatsoever.

4. Disable Anti-virus Protection

Internet security/Online security programs focus on providing custom real-time protection & firewall. Let us take Avast solution for instance, I noticed that Avast Internet Security program blocks applications and software’s that aren’t signed or found suspicious. I recommend turning it off to extract a file or folder. Remember, if it contains threats such as Trojans, Malware, and Adware, then it can affect your computer negatively.

Step 1: Click on the program icon located in the taskbar, and right-mouse click to view more options.

Step 2: Select “Avast Shields Control,” and then click on “Disable for 10 Minutes.”

Never turn off the protection shields permanently because it can reflect negatively. Unknown programs & threats are always waiting for a chance to drop down the shields, and attack the computer. Never give an opening for online threats, and the folder or file might contain a virus.

5. Create a Local Account Token Filter Policy in Registry

Usually, the Windows error 0x80004005 occurs, when accessing a Shared Drive/Folder. The instructions will work on an earlier version of Windows OS as well, so do not worry about irrelevancy.

Step 1: Press Windows Key and Press R, and then type “REGEDIT” and hit enter.

Step 2: Access the folder in the Regedit and I have shared the location path as well.

  1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
  2. HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

The beginning name of the path might differ on your Windows copy, but the default name always remains “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

Step 3: Click on the folder, and then right-mouse click for more options.

  1. For 32 bit system, create a new DWORD value called LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy.
  2. For a 64 bit system, make a QWORD (64-bit) called LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy.

Step 4: I make mistakes, but you can delete the newly created rule, and then rename the file again.

No need to worry about the complex procedures because it won’t harm a Windows PC in any manner. The performance of the Windows machine will remain the same, and it doesn’t add extra load on CPU resources.

Bottom Line

I wouldn’t say that everyone who is reading this, in the hope of solving error code 0x80004005 will leave happily. I have already mentioned that there are too many unspecified errors, and the biggest software company on Earth finding difficulties in solving it. I recommend approaching the official Microsoft forum for further support for unique scenarios.
