Fiber Internet Plans: How to Know What’s Worth Your Money

 October 22, 2024

By  Kyrie Mattos

Fiber internet is a fantastic way to be able to connect all devices in the home with high-speed internet without a drop in quality or speeds, but finding the right plan isn’t always easy. It is important to compare plans carefully to find the right one and to make sure it’s fast enough for the household’s needs. Some of the things to consider include the following.

Consider the Availability in the Area

It’s important to consider what’s available in an area when browsing fiber internet options. Be sure to make sure fiber is available through the ISP in the area and that they can do the installation as soon as possible. If fiber isn’t available yet, it’s a good idea to let providers know that there is interest so that they know where to expand in the near future. Check with providers to see who has it available to start narrowing down the options.

Check the Speed and Bandwidth

Always check out the speed and bandwidth offered by the ISP. It is important to compare speeds and prices carefully to avoid overpaying for reduced speeds. When comparing speeds and price, divide the price by the expected speed. This offers a base number so it’s easy to compare different packages that might have different speeds. The key is to compare the Mbps prices to see which plan is a better overall deal.

Look into Reliability and Uptime

Make sure the ISP is known for reliability and higher uptime. Uptime is the amount of time it’s possible to use the internet, and this should be as close to 100% as possible. Though issues can occur, they are less likely to happen with fiber internet. Check to see if the ISP is known for going down frequently or offering spotty service, or if they’re known to excel with higher uptime rates.

Check For Data Caps or Throttling

Some ISPs will have data caps or start to throttle the internet speeds if the user uses too much internet in a given period. Though this is less common today, some ISPs do still follow this, so it is important to check for it before signing up for a plan. Most data caps are done on a monthly basis, so if a person uses a certain amount of internet within a single month, the internet speeds will be reduced until the end of the month, when the tracking starts over.

Compare the Prices Carefully

It is a good idea to compare the prices carefully before making any decision. Along with checking the price per Mbps, it’s a good idea to look at the different fees that are added onto the price and to compare the overall cost to make sure the internet is affordable. Hidden fees are challenging to detect before signing up, but often this is possible to do with a little bit of work. See if it’s possible to view a bill before signing up to see what fees are included or ask what the total bill will be after signing up for service.

If you’re ready to upgrade to fiber internet, make sure you choose the right plan to ensure it’s worth the cost. Take the time to compare the different options using the information here to make sure you’re getting a great deal on the faster internet speeds you need.
