It gives us the ability to insert images without compromising the quality, as well as inserting various other things in the document. Sometimes, extracting these images from a word document can be a tedious task and if you wanted to learn how to extract images from word document file in this guide we are going to take a look at exactly that.

How to Extract & Save Images from Word Document

Before you begin, please ensure you make a few copies of the file you wish to experiment on. Some of these methods may corrupt the files if done improperly. It’s better to be safe than sorry, make a few copies.

Method 1: Using the Save As Option

If you want a simple way to extract images from a Word Document and don’t mind losing out on quality then you can simply right click on any image in the document and click Save As to save the image to a location of your choice. 

This option isn’t recommended but you can use it if you are in a time crunch.

Method 2: Using an Extraction Software

You can use a third party extraction tool like 7Zip or WinRar to extract and save images from word document. You can do it by – 

  • Right click on the file you wish to extract images from

  • Select 7Zip or WinRar and select Extract Files option to extract files to a location of your choice or use Extract here (Recommended) as it will extract right besides the file.

  • You will find a folder with the same name as your file. Open it
  • Find a folder called Word
  • Open a folder called Media
  • You will find all the images here which you were looking for.

We used 7Zip in this method but any other extraction software should work in almost the same way.

Method 3: Saving the Document as a Web Page

This is one of the easiest methods to extract images from word document. All you need to do is –

  • Open the Document
  • From the top ribbon click File
  • Find an option called Save as and Select it

  • Give the file a name as you wish and choose Webpage in the Save as type drop down

  • Please make sure you don’t use Web Page filtered as that will drastically decrease the quality and the resolution of the images.
  • Click on the Save button
  • Now go to where you saved the file. A folder with the name you choose will be present which will contain all the images.

  • You can now cut or copy those images wherever you wish to.

Method 4: Changing the Extension from Docx to Zip

Quite similar to Method 2. This method too involves extracting images using an extraction tool after changing the file format.

  • Open Start and search for File explorer options

  • Go to view and uncheck the hide extensions for known file type option.

  • Save and Exit
  • Go to the file you want images from Right click and rename
  • You will see an .Docx at the end, change it to .Zip
  • Hit enter and then okay if any prompt appears.
  • Right click and hit Extract here. A folder will appear.
  • Find a folder called word and inside you will find a folder called media.

You have been successful in  extracting images from MS Word Document.

Method 5: The Copy Paste Method

This method isn’t highly efficient but if you want just one or two images from the document then this will work just fine.

  • Open the document
  • Select the image you want and right click on it
  • Select Copy
  • Now open MS Paint or any other Image processor like GIMP or Photoshop (We will be using paint)
  • Open paint and hit paste from the top ribbon

  • Press Control + S to save the images where you wish.

This is an easy way to extract images from word document.
