As a Los Angeles jury deliberates in the case of California vs. Johannes Mehserle, The Bay Citizen’s reporters fanned out from El Cerrito to Oakland’s Fruitvale to San Francisco to ask residents what they think about the case and its coming verdict. The murder trial was moved down south because of concerns that the former BART officer couldn’t get a fair hearing in the Bay Area due to all the publicity.
And if you haven’t heard of Johannes Mehserle yet – we found quite a few people who haven’t – he’s the former BART police officer who shot and killed an unarmed Oscar Grant on the platform of the Fruitvale station on New Year’s Day 2009. Videos of the shooting were recorded by BART passengers and quickly transmitted across the nation.
And while all the people we spoke to in our very informal survey believed Mehserle should receive jail time, the sympathy quotient in favor of Mehserle appeared to grow the further we went from Oakland. Take a listen and let us know what you think.
