Silicon Valley is the only large metro area in the country where Asians are the fastest-growing ethnic group, according to an analysis of census data released Wednesday by William Frey of the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank.
The government-defined San Jose metro area, which also includes Sunnyvale and Santa Clara, is now 33 percent Asian, 30 percent Hispanic, 30 percent white and 3 percent black, Frey found. It is the only metro area besides Honolulu, Hawaii, where Asians are the largest ethnic group.
San Francisco — with a government-designated metro area that includes San Mateo, Oakland and Fremont — is 35 percent white, 31 percent Asian, 18 percent Hispanic and 11 percent black.
Among major American cities, Oakland and San Francisco saw the some of the highest levels of black flight in the nation.
Oakland ranked sixth in the country, losing 33,000 African-American residents, while San Francisco lost 12,000 black residents, the 10th most in the nation.
The study also found that well over half of America’s cities are now majority nonwhite.
