A California Highway Patrol officer is in critical condition after a shootout with a driver on Interstate 680 this morning, according to Contra Costa County sheriff's department spokesman Jimmy Lee.
The suspect in the shooting died, Lee said.
The officer and the suspect were rushed to local hospitals after exchanging gunfire about 8:30 a.m. near Walnut Creek. The southbound lanes of the freeway near Livorna Road remain closed.
Lee said the shooting occurred during a traffic stop, but he did not say why the officer pulled over the suspect's car.
Authorities have located a Nissan Maxima they were seeking in connection with the incident.
Lee said the car was found in Danville and that officers determined the woman driving the Maxima was not involved with the shooting.
The northbound lanes of I-680 reopened at 1 p.m., Lee said. Some southbound lanes reopened shortly after 4 p.m., according to a tweet from Lee's office.
