Bay Area Dominates List of Cities with Highest Percentage of Asians

Six of the top 10 cities with the highest percentage of Asian residents in the United States are located in the Bay Area, according to a U.S. Census report released Wednesday.

Daly City has the second-highest percentage of Asians of any city in the nation. (Honolulu, Hawaii has the highest percentage.) More than 58 percent of the 101,123 people living in Daly City are of Asian descent. Fremont ranks third with 55 percent, and Sunnyvale follows at fourth with 44 percent. Santa Clara (41 percent), San Francisco (36 percent) and San Jose (35 percent) are also in the top 10.

Daly City also has the highest percentage in the nation of people who identified themselves as only Asian and not mixed race.

In the Bay Area, approximately 650,000 people identified themselves as Chinese, the region's largest Asian group. Statewide, Filipinos are the largest single Asian group, followed by Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and Indian.

San Jose and San Francisco had the nation's third- and fourth-largest Asian populations, respectively. (Only New York City and Los Angeles had more Asian residents.) Fremont ranked ninth on that list.

The number of Asian residents in the state jumped to 5.6 million in 2010 from 4.2 million a decade earlier, an increase of 33 percent.

Nationwide, the number of number of people who identified themselves as Asian increased by 45.6 percent over the past decade, a growth rate faster than that of any other demographic group in the country.
