Backyard Tree Care: How to Keep Them Healthy

 May 14, 2024

By  Kyrie Mattos

Trees provide numerous benefits to the property, from fresh oxygen to shade to the perfect place for a treehouse or swing. Keeping the trees healthy is crucial, as it helps the tree grow and thrive and can help prevent potential damage to the property. There are a number of small things that can be done to help keep the trees on the property healthy and ensure they are growing properly.

Pruning and Trimming Help Them Grow

If there are any dead or dying branches on the tree, you need your trees trimmed. Branches that are no longer healthy have the potential to fall and damage the property or injure anyone under them. On top of this, pruning and trimming can help ensure trees don’t grow into hazardous areas, like close to power lines, and can help let more light through the trees to benefit the plants below. It is recommended that pruning and trimming be done regularly to keep the trees in good shape.

Water is Needed for Healthy Growth

Trees need water to survive, and they do get plenty of it from the rain. If it hasn’t rained in a while, though, the trees on the property may need to be watered. Sprinklers or a hose can make it easy to ensure trees get sufficient water on a regular basis, but it is important to avoid overwatering the trees, too. Overwatering can lead to issues with the roots and can actually cause the tree to die if it can’t get oxygen because of oversaturated soil.

Fertilizers can Help Encourage Growth

Nutrients are needed for trees to grow, but they can deplete the nutrients naturally in the soil. It is important to use the right fertilizers for the trees to ensure they receive all of the nutrients they need and in the correct amounts. Different types of trees may require different nutrients, so it is a good idea to speak with an expert about what is needed for the tree and how often to add fertilizers to the soil around the tree.

Inspect for Pests or Diseases

Pests and diseases can impact trees and lead to significant damage or death. It is important to inspect the trees on the property regularly for any signs that something might be wrong. This doesn’t mean taking an in-depth look at all parts of the tree but should include looking at the health of the leaves, the branches, and the roots. If anything is noticed, get help for the tree quickly to prevent the issue from becoming worse.

Get Expert Assistance as Needed

Keeping trees healthy can involve getting expert assistance. From having a professional prune or trim the tree to working with an arborist to handle any pests or diseases, the right help can ensure the trees have everything they need to grow and be as healthy as possible.

The trees on the property can provide numerous benefits, but these benefits are lost if the trees die or are damaged. Instead, it’s important to protect the health of the trees by paying attention to them and what they need to thrive. If you aren’t sure how to help the trees be healthy or you want help with pruning, trimming, and other services, speak with an expert today.
