7 Spring Skincare Essentials for Mature Skin

Our skin needs ebb and flows over time, from infancy to old age, and one season that can be difficult to navigate for many people in middle age, as we start to deal with mature skin and its ever-changing needs. But skincare should not have to be complicated, so learning the essentials for your skin type is key to a glowing complexion. With spring upon us, while you engage in your spring cleaning, ditch the products that no longer serve you and stock up on these skincare essentials to enjoy this new season (literally and metaphorically) with the best skin of your life.

Lip Plumping Treatments

One of the first places to show signs of aging is our lips; not only are they more prone to dryness like the rest of mature skin, but they also lose their thickness and, for many people, become thinner. While plenty of people opt for lip fillers, just as many are opposed to medical intervention to maintain a youthful pout, making a lip plumping treatment necessary to keep your lips full, supple and hydrated. You can apply these treatments both morning and evening for maximum results; though visible results are immediate, after a month of consistent use, your results are fully realized in color, softness, hydration, and plumpness.

Moisturizers

As we age, our skin tends to get drier, even in the warmer weather that comes with spring. So, if you tend to only hydrate your skin at night with a deep cream, use a moisturizer in the daytime too. Moisturizers also include body creams that you may use to get away with the preceding. You want to prevent crepey or sagging body skin, common on the legs, arms, and neck, that comes with aging skin. Moisture is a key step after cleansing your face, bathing, or showering.

Exfoliating

Exfoliation is important as we age because it helps with cellular renewal. While collagen production may slow down as we mature, our skin cells don’t, so sloughing off the old skin through manual and liquid exfoliation is a critical step for your skin. You want to ensure you’re avoiding harsh scrubs with physical exfoliants as your mature skin is more delicate than it once was, though everyone, no matter their age, should avoid these abrasive products that tend to do more harm than good.

Dull Skin Treatments

One common complaint among people getting to know their mature skin and how to deal with it is the skin appears duller than it once did. While dewy and plump skin is a hallmark of youth, just because you’re aging doesn’t mean you have to live without that glow. Treating dull skin is easy through the use of products like stem cell moisturizing, illuminating serums, and dewy sprays. Ensure you use a toner after cleansing and apply these products between your toners and moisturizers.

Hydrating Cleansers

While cleansing your skin should happen both in the morning, and the evening, you may need to check the ingredients of your current facial cleanser to be sure it’s hydrating enough. One reason for the above-mentioned dull appearance is lack of hydration, and while you’re using moisturizers during the day and richer creams at night, you also want to cleanse your skin with something that nourishes and hydrates. Cream cleansers are the first line of defense against mature skin.

Eye Creams

The skin around our eyes is the most delicate on our entire bodies. While there’s a good chance you already have a facial cream in your medicine cabinet, do you have one specifically formulated for your eyes? Not only do eye creams hydrate this delicate area, but they can also stave off fine lines and wrinkles, fight puffiness and help with the appearance of dark circles. One common issue during middle and older age is we sleep less, so combat the physical side effects of that on your face with an eye cream formulated for aging skin.

Toners

As referenced earlier, toners should be used after cleansing and before applying topicals and moisturizers during the day. You’ll also want to use toners after cleansing in your nighttime skin routine. Toners are fantastic because they tighten pores, help with fine lines and wrinkles, and even improve skin tone and texture. If you don’t have time to wash your face in the morning, toners can work double duty with the above benefits and a light cleanse.

Taking the guesswork out of caring for your mature skin is easy if you include the above products in your skincare routines. You may not be young anymore, but you’re still young at heart and want your appearance to reflect that. The choice to undergo surgical treatments or smaller procedures like Botox and filler is also common these days to deal with problem areas your products can’t treat. The bottom line – is there’s nothing wrong with investing in yourself to help you look as good as you feel.
