For acing any sport, it is very important to have the right kind of gear. In this blog, we will take you through the 5 most important accessories that you must have to begin surfing. Remember that starting out without these crucial accessories can lend you a mess!

1. Surfing Board

The first and foremost requirement for surfing is a surfer board. It might sound like stating the obvious but it is what it is. Choosing a surfer board is alot more than just picking the latest and the most expensive model.

The different categories of boards serve different levels of experts therefore, it is very important to find out the one that will suit you the best. The two major factors to consider while choosing a surfer board is the volume and the rocker.

Volume is the product of the length, breadth, and height of the surfing board while rocker implies the curve from the surfer’s nose to its tail. If you are a newbie surfer, you should ideally choose a flatter surfboard with a big volume. As for the experts, they can go with high rocker boards that are streamlined for quick moves. 2. Leash

Considering the complexity of the sport, it is very important for you as a surfer to prioritise your safety. Leash is a piece of safety equipment that is in the form of a urethane cord attached to the deck of a surfboard, down near the tail.

It hooks you to the surfboard and safeguards you from being swept away by waves. It also prevents runaway surfboards from hitting other surfers and swimmers. It is especially important if you are a beginner or surfing in crowded water.

While buying a leash, always look for the one that has double padded ankle straps to provide you with additional comfort and safety. It should be always the same length or more as your surfer board. For example, if your board is 8’0 the leash too should be the same if not more.

3. Wetsuit

A wet suit is a thermal garment that keeps you warm and dry when you are surfing. It is one of the most important gears as the longer your body is warm in the water, the more you can increase the surfing duration.

It is usually made of foamed neoprene and provides thermal insulation and protection from abrasion, ultraviolet exposure, and stings from marine organisms. Always be careful about picking the right size of the wetsuit. A too-tight wetsuit can make your movement difficult while a loose one just would not let you focus.

The type of your wetsuit will depend on the temperature of the water and the wind chill factor. If it is warm enough already, you can even skip wearing one.

4. Surf Traction Pad

A traction pad is a piece of foam attached to the tail of your surfboard. The purpose of a traction pad is to provide a good grip on your back foot so you don’t overstep and spill right off the back. It is self-adhesive and cannot be removed once placed on the surd board.

The back of the traction pad called the kick tail is a slightly elevated part which blocks your back foot. The thickness can vary, from about 12mm to about 25mm.

5. Surf Earplugs

They are generally used by surfers while surfing on rough and cold waves. The earplugs prevent the cold water from gushing into the ear canal. Long exposure to cold water and chilly winds can lead to a disformity called ‘Surfer’s Ear’.

Another reason why surf earplugs are important is that it helps you focus better. With the wind and water constantly irritating the ears, your attention can divert from surfing.
