If you’re going to cross the bay during Memorial Day weekend, a kayak is probably your best bet. Traveling by BART or car will be slowed by work on both the Bay Bridge and the Transbay Tube.

BART officials said that just one bore will be open in the Transbay Tube over the long weekend, so that crews can work on the cables that electrify the BART track.

For riders, that means no direct rides between San Francisco and Dublin or Fremont. Before 2:30 p.m. on Sunday and Monday, riders coming from San Francisco will have to travel to the 12th Street station in Oakland and then transfer to a Fremont or Dublin train. Riders coming in on the Fremont or Dublin lines will be diverted to the MacArthur BART station where they can transfer to a San Francisco-bound train.

Drivers heading from San Francisco to the East Bay will also encounter a new detour on the Bay Bridge starting this weekend. The eastbound lanes will curve slightly to the right at the end of the decline section of the bridge.

The detour will allow construction crews to build what Caltrans calls the "Oakland touchdown" for the new eastern span of the bridge. The touchdown is where the new span will connect with the toll plaza.

Although the bridge will remain open during construction, Caltrans warns that some eastbound lanes will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday nights. Westbound traffic will not be affected.

Caltrans officials said that the speed limit on the detour won't need to be lowered as it was on the S-curve, which still causes a near-constant backup.

BART riders can expect the same delays the following weekend as well, BART officials said.
