SF Schools Chief to Retire

San Francisco Unified School District Superintendent Carlos Garcia announced today that he will retire in July, ending his five-year tenure as the head of the district. Garcia, who turned 60 in January, said at a news conference late this morning that he is retiring as superintendent on July 5. Bay Area Schools Honored for Narrowing Achievement Gap

Twenty-six Bay Area schools won awards this week for outstanding academic achievement, especially among low-income students. Of the 6,000 California schools eligible for Title I Academic Achievement Awards this year, just 209 were honored. Alameda County led the Bay Area pack with 16 winning schools.
