The Agenda: What to Do This Week

Plus: Local culturati divulge their plans

By Reyhan Harmanci on July 30, 2010 - 8:59 a.m. PDT

As we round the turn from July to August (gah!), folks may leave town for warmer destinations, but not for lack of things to do in the Bay Area. This week's all-musician panel, for instance is finding time to sit by the fire and play outside at Golden Gate Park. Emcee Chela Simone, singer-songwriter Sean Hayes and clarinet composer Aaron Novik share their weekend plans after our week-long picks.

So what are these guys up to this weekend? Scroll down to find out. And here are The Bay Citizen's picks for the week:

Friday 7/30: (Performance) Hotel Voices

Single room occupancy residences, or SROs, are not unique to San Francisco but they are a bigger part of our urban landscape than many other cities. Known most often as hotels for poor people, and clustered in neighborhoods like the Tenderloin, Mission and Mid-Market area, most people just walk briskly by. But "Hotel Voices," a performance piece written and enacted by SRO residents, shows what life is like inside the buildings. It was made after a free 20-week workshop for SRO residents with writers Tony Robles and Lisa "Tiny" Garcia in collaboration with Bindlestiff Studio's Allen Manalo. This POOR Magazine produced project is part of LaborFest 2010. $10, although no one turned away for lack of funds.

Redstone Building, 2940 16th St., San Francisco

Friday 7/30: (Shopping) Barney's Warehouse Sale

For the next week at Fort Mason, a very special event will be taking over a large warehouse room: the much-anticipated Barney's Warehouse Sale. This roving event, which also lands in L.A. and New York, happens first in the Bay Area. This is gravy for bargain-hunters who might window shop in the Union Square Barney's Store, but can only open their wallets during the deeply discounted event. Racks and racks of designer stuff is there for the taking, provided you aren't the modest sort. The sale has rows and rows of dresses, jeans, shirts and accessories but no dressing rooms. Spandex undergarments are advised.

Herbst Pavilion, Fort Mason, San Francisco

Saturday 7/31: (Sports) B.A.D. Girls Roller Derby

Those B.A.D. girls are back in the Bay, rolling through the 2010 roller derby season! B.A.D. stands for Bay Area Derby, but of course, it's another way of saying these women do not pull punches. This match pits the Oakland Outlaws against the Port City Roller Girls, who hail from Stockton. Don't miss the action, on and off the rink -- who knows, you might have an experience straight from the movies and want to try out yourself. $10 advance, $12 at door.

Crane Pavilion, 1414 Harbor Way, Richmond

Sunday 8/1: (Discussion) Comedy Talks

Along with an upcoming Commonwealth Club event with rising SF political comics, the new season of USF Comedy Talks series is starting this week, featuring veteran star George Segal (been in too many movies to count, including a memorable turn as neurotic dad in "Flirting with Disaster"), writer/director Paul Mazursky (wrote the pilot for "The Monkees," as well as directing "Down and Out in Beverly Hills") and actor and Bay Area native Ronnie Schell (been in 24 movies, including Carol Reiner's "Fatal Instinct" spoof). Robert Strong hosts, but stick around for the audience Q&A -- always good for a laugh. $35.

USF Presentation Theater, 2350 Turk St., San Francisco

Thursday 8/5: (Dance) Laura Arrington and Jesse Hewit/Strong Behavior

With the summer inching closer to fall, it's time for CounterPULSE's two summer artists in residence, Jesse Hewit and Laura Arrington, to reveal what they've been working on. It's a double bill: Arrington’s “Hot Wings” examines what exactly "feminine" means in a dance/theater work that is, as CounterPULSE's press materials note, "probably feminist." Hewit is also concerned with the feminine, in a piece called "Tell Them That You Saw Me," that uses lipstick, repetition, sacred hymns, fatigue, and sex stories. Ladies, bring your smelling salts: It could get messy. $10-$15.

CounterPULSE, 1310 Mission St., San Francisco

So, what are you doing this weekend?

Chela Simone, emcee

I'm packing now and moving into my new house this weekend, and then hanging in with my kid, my ex's daughter. On Saturday, though, I'm not going to be packing or unpacking -- going to DeeCee's Summer Shakedown at Club Six, with J*Davey, Honor Roll, Pam the Funkstress, with hip hop, rock, electro, dancehall. And then, on Sunday, going to paint my room and veg out in front of the fireplace and make smores.

Sean Hayes, singer-songwriter

On Saturday I'm playing at Bicycle Music Fest in Golden Gate Park, I am on at 3:15 p.m. but the music is starting at noon, all of the PA is powered by people who sit and ride the bicycles...it's a whole day event...on Friday? Let me think. What am I doing. I think I'm wide open. I don't have any idea, which is nice. I think it's an open day, I'm happily free. I'm almost sure I'm wrong, that I'm probably forgetting something that I'd do. Sunday, I've got some plans to go look for sunshine. It's been so grey in the morning lately. My wife and I are thinking of driving north to find some warmth.

Aaron Novik, clarinetist

On Friday night, i'm going bowling with my girlfriend at Presidio Bowl and some friends of hers, a couple. I've not met them, but my girlfriend said the guy works for NASA. Saturday, i'm rehearsing with Dominque Leone for a West Coast tour, starting on August 6. Sunday i rehearse with Dominique again, and then i play two sets at Cafe Royale with the Nathan Clevenger Group.
