Verdict Day in Mehserle Case Arrives (Map)

Oscar Grant-related events planned around Oakland

Verdict day is here in the murder trial of former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle. Both protesters and officials are planning events around Oakland in response. Below are the locations of protests and events we’ve seen advertised for the day of the verdict, including both demonstrations and city-sponsored "healing centers."

Attitudinal Healing Connection: Youth Gathering Spot

There will be youth speakers, music, poetry, choirs and other activities.  Art groups and media groups will allow Oaklanders to express their feelings.

Uhuru House

The Uhuru Solidarity Movement, also known as the African People's Solidarity Committee, is calling for protest of any verdict less than second-degree murder. The group has issued invitations to rally downtown or attend a planning meeting at the Uhuru House in East Oakland. For more information, go to www.uhurusolidarity.org.

Urban Services YMCA

The YMCA is at 3265 Market St. in Oakland. Sponsored by Oaklanders for Peace, Justice and Healing, a coalition of city leaders, community and faith-based groups, these “healing centers” will feature speak-outs, music, food, digital storytelling and peacemaking circles. The city hopes the events will draw young people who want to “express themselves in positive, creative ways.”

Youth UpRising is at 8711 MacArthur Blvd. in Oakland. Sponsored by Oaklanders for Peace, Justice and Healing, a coalition of city leaders, community and faith-based groups, these “healing centers” will feature speak-outs, music, food, digital storytelling and peacemaking circles. The city hopes the events will draw young people who want to “express themselves in positive, creative ways.”

East Bay Asian Youth Center

The East Bay Asian Youth Center is at 2025 E. 12th St. in Oakland. The city hopes the events will draw young people who want to “express themselves in positive, creative ways.”

Arroyo Viejo Recreation Center

Arroyo Viejo Recreation Center is at 7701 Krause Ave. in Oakland. Sponsored by Oaklanders for Peace, Justice and Healing, a coalition of city leaders, community and faith-based groups, these “healing centers” will feature speak-outs, music, food, digital storytelling and peacemaking circles. The city hopes the events will draw young people who want to “express themselves in positive, creative ways.”

Downtown Oakland/Frank Ogawa Plaza

City officials, including council members, clergy members, community organizers and the most visible group, police, plan to be among those gathering at 14th and Broadway after the verdict is announced. The Justice for Oscar Grant Committee, an umbrella organization that has the endorsement of the Grant family, has claimed responsibility for organizing this large protest. But many other activist groups with diverging philosophies plan to be there, as well.
