Golden Gate Community Health to Close
The financially ailing former Planned Parenthood affiliate will shut its doors, affecting thousands of patients
Several employees posted the news on Facebook Monday night. According to a former employee with ties to the organization, staff members were notified of the clinic’s closure and layoffs about 4:30 p.m. Monday. All the remaining appointments will be routed to the main clinic in San Francisco, which will remain open for about two more weeks, the former employee said. The other clinics, including locations in San Rafael, Oakland, Hayward and San Mateo, will close by the end of the week. The organization’s Rohnert Park location was closed in October.
As The Bay Citizen has reported, the organization lost its Planned Parenthood affiliation in September amid administrative and financial turmoil.
Under the leadership of former CEO Dian Harrison, the nonprofit lost $2.8 million during the 2008-2009 tax year and had not broken even since 2005-2006.
Despite a $536,000 shortfall in 2010, the organization renamed itself Golden Gate Community Health and promised to continue providing services to some 50,000 patients, 90 percent of whom live at or below poverty level. At the same time, the organization began urgent efforts to raise money, launching a campaign to raise $1.5 million by the end of the year.
The struggle continued into 2011, with GGCH hosting open houses for donors as recently as two weeks ago, according to a former employee.
Neither Harrison nor several GGCH officials responded to email requests for comment late Monday night.
It’s unclear exactly how many patients will be affected, but local Planned Parenthood affiliates are likely to bear the brunt of GGCH’s closure.
After the nonprofit’s disaffiliation, Planned Parenthood raced to expand coverage to areas previously serviced by GGCH's predecessor. A Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific clinic opened Monday in Mill Valley. The affiliate, headquartered in Concord, has also opened locations in San Francisco, Marin, Mendocino and Sonoma counties. Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, based in San Jose, took over Alameda and San Mateo counties.
It’s also unclear how the organization’s obvious financial problems will affect the litigation brought by Harrison, who has sued for $180,000 she says she is owed in severance pay.
