The Agenda: What to Do for Halloween
Plus, local politicos on Halloween plans (Spoiler alert: Go Giants!)
With all of the Bay Area swept up in Giants fever this week, it seems that people are trading in their traditional Halloween garb for orange shirts and face paint. For this special-edition Agenda, we went to some of the area's top politicos — Mayor Gavin Newsom, San Francisco Supervisor Bevan Dufty, former Mayor Willie Brown — to see what they'd be up to.
But even though this Halloween may be more sporty than spooky, this weekend is full of great Halloween events. We've got a lot of throwback Halloween parties — Debaser's spooky '90s Manchester rave party and a showing of creepy Disney films from the '70s — and, of course, some traditional 2000s Lady Gaga fun.
So what are these guys up to this weekend? Scroll down to find out. And here are The Bay Citizen's picks for the week:
Thursday 10/28: The Art of Embalming
Have you ever been curious about how to embalm a body? Mortician Thomas Marsden will demonstrate — without a real cadaver — how to embalm a body, tracing the steps from death to burial. Along with demonstrations, Marsden will talk about the history of the art of embalming and some of today's high-tech techniques.
The Bone Room Presents, 1573 Solano Ave. Berkeley, CA 94707
Friday 10/29: Debaser: A Spooky '90s Warehouse Party
The now infamous '90s alternative rock party asks: What's scarier than an early-'90s Manchester rave? UK expat DJ Chris Orr will partner with Debaser's native mixmasters Jamie Jams, EmDee and Stab Master Arson to stage a Hacienda-style rave at the Minna Gallery on Halloween. Special perks: if you show up dressed up as Monica Lewinsky, Zack Morris or any '90s-themed costume, you don't have to pay the $5 cover charge. And there will be glow sticks!
Minna Gallery, 111 Minna Street San Francisco, CA 94105-3701
Friday 10/29: Hallowgagaween: Party On SF
Waiting for a chance to sport your latest Gaga-wear? Whether it’s Meat Dress Gaga or Pantsuit Gaga, this Friday’s Hallowgagaween Dance Party ‘Party On!’ at supperclub is San Francisco’s “newest and gayest dance party." You can dress up as anything you want, but a Gaga costume could win you a pair of tickets to Monster Ball 2011. The event will feature monster house, electro, pop, hip-hop and rock jams by DJs Ms. Jackson & Kidd Sysko. Doors open at 10 p.m., but beware — doors close when the zombies come out.
supperclub SF, 657 Harrison St
Saturday 10/30: Bay Area Derby Girls: Trick or Beatdown
It's a roller derby Halloween party: The Richmond Wrecking Belles will challenge The San Francisco ShEvil Dead to an epic all-women flat-track roller derby match. Plus, it's the only time you'll be able to catch these teams in action this year — but beware, roller derby is a contact sport and not for the faint-hearted. Bring your family and Halloween costumes. Get tickets here.
The Craneway Pavillion, 1414 Harbour Way, San Francisco
Saturday 10/30: Poltergeist at the Castro Theatre
What are you doing the night before Halloween? The Castro Theatre will be hosting "a spook-alicious Halloween gala" featuring a screening of the 1982 classic Poltergeist. The gala tribute will also include a live interview with Poltergeist star JoBeth Williams, a "Carol Anne Look-Alike Contest" hosted by Connie Champagne and, last but definitely not least, a "horrific fashion show" called "Poltergayest" (performed by The Sick & Twisted Players).
Castro Theatre, 429 Castro Street, San Francisco
Sunday 10/31: Matinees for Maniacs: CREEPY DiSNEY FiLMS
Before Disney became the sugary, family-oriented dream factory that it is, it had its share of films that — let’s put it this way — you wouldn’t want to watch at home alone. On Sunday afternoon, Matinees for Maniacs (part of Midnites for Maniacs) will present a double bill at the Castro Theatre featuring some of Disney’s downright spooky films from the 1970s. Ray Bradbury’s “Something Wicked This Way Comes,” an adaptation of Bradbury’s story "The Devil Himself," was withheld from Disney for a full year because it was too scary. “Escape to Witch Mountain,” another mid-'70s Disney classic, is the second feature film. Both movies will be preceded by trailers of other 1970s Disney films. Click here for the full schedule.

So, what are you doing this weekend?
Gavin Newsom, S.F. Mayor and Candidate for Lieutenant Governor
From spokesman Tony Winnicker:
That's an easy one this year. Mayor Newsom will be dressed in Orange & Black on Halloween Night cheering the San Francisco Giants onto victory in Game 4 of the World Series. Of course, he'll be wearing that same outfit tonight, Saturday and if necessary Monday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week as well. Go Giants!
Willie Brown, Former San Francisco Mayor
I'm not sure what I'm doing... There's so much going on. But for Halloween, if I was thinking about as a costume, I'd go as Chris Daly.
Bevan Dufty, San Francisco Supervisor
I'm going to a wear a Giants uniform. My number is 8 for my district. On Saturday, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are having a children's festival for Halloween at the Eureka Valley Rec Center. I'm going to that with my daughter. I always go to 24th Street in Noe Valley to give out candy — that's the main phase.
I'm working both Saturday and Sunday in the Castro, which will be busy with the police. I'm always out until the last people go home. I'm very hopeful that this year, with the Home for Halloween campaign, that things will be good. And oh yeah, I'm wearing the uniform both days. It's washable.
