Single room occupancy residences, or SROs, are not unique to San Francisco but they are a bigger part of our urban landscape than many other cities. Known most often as hotels for poor people, and clustered in neighborhoods like the Tenderloin, Mission and Mid-Market area, most people just walk briskly by. But "Hotel Voices," a performance piece written and enacted by SRO residents, shows what life is like inside the buildings. It was made after a free 20-week workshop for SRO residents with writers Tony Robles and Lisa "Tiny" Garcia in collaboration with Bindlestiff Studio's Allen Manalo. This POOR Magazine produced project is part of LaborFest 2010. $10, although no one turned away for lack of funds.
