First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign to fight childhood obesity will be stepping out in Fremont this weekend.

This Saturday is National Get Outdoors Day, and there's a free festival to celebrate it at Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation Area in Fremont from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Along with entertainment including a children's puppet show and Chinese ribbon dancers, there will be a Let's Move fitness walk, as well as nature walks to learn about the environment.

Children need 60 minutes of play with moderate to rigorous physical activity every day to help achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Americans between the ages of 8 and 18 spend an average of 7.5 hours a day in front of screens, such as TVs, computers, video games, cellphones and movies, according to Let's Move Outside, a project of the Department of the Interior

Of course, if you — and any children you may have in tow — can't make it to Fremont, that's no excuse to sit around inside all day. The East Bay Regional Park District has 64 other parks to chose from. And if the East Bay is not your scene, this Discover the Forest site can hook you up with a forest or park near you.
