Food Stamp Applications Surge in Contra Costa

More families are struggling to put food on the table in Contra Costa county, KCBS reported. In the past three years, the county has seen the number of households on food stamps almost double from 16,000 to 30,000.

The fastest growing segment of the population living in poverty in the county are kids. Some 30 percent of people served by food banks and soup kitchens in Contra Costa and Solano counties are children.

Nationwide, almost 15 percent of the population now relies on food stamps, the Wall Street Journal reported. This week, Congresswoman Jackie Speier, a Democrat representing San Francisco and San Mateo, is spending five days attempting to eat on $4.50 a day, the budget of a food stamp recipient.
