Still waiting for a tax refund check from the state? It's possible it may have been returned to the sender, the Franchise Tax Board said in a statement Monday.
The board announced that it has more than 52,000 returned refund checks, ranging from $1,000 to $39,000 — or more than $17 million of money that belongs to taxpayers.
"Typically, refunds are returned because the taxpayer changed residences after filing a tax return," according to the statement.
