Woman Claims Lucasfilm Fired Her for Being Pregnant

In the weeks before canceling a job offer they had extended to a pregnant woman, aides to filmmaker George Lucas e-mailed each other about their reservations over hiring an expectant mother, San Francisco lawyer Angela Alioto told a Marin County jury Monday.

Alioto’s client and daughter-in-law Julie Gilman Veronese sued Lucasfilm Ltd. late last year. She claims the company hired her for a $75,000-per-year position at Lucas’ Marin home but refused to let her start work after learning she was pregnant.

Veronese, 37, is represented by her mother-in-law, a former San Francisco city supervisor, and her husband, former San Francisco Police Commissioner Joseph Alioto Veronese.

In one e-mail presented by the legal team, Lucas’ personal assistant Sarita Patel said she was “afraid to bring on a pregnant person.”

Attorney Janine Simerly, representing Lucasfilm, contended that Veronese was hired for a 30-day project, not a full-time job. Later, Simerly said, Patel and Veronese agreed it “was not the right fit.”

The decision “had nothing whatsoever to do with Ms. Veronese being pregnant,” Simerly said.

The court is scheduled to hear a "motion to quash" Tuesday morning in the case.
