Whitman's Per Vote Spending Revealed

If we didn’t already know that Republican Meg Whitman threw crazy money at her failed gubernatorial campaign, the Oakland Tribune has done the math to tell us just how much of her own money she blew to garner the votes she did. And still lose by a sizeable margin to Jerry Brown.

Whitman spent $144.2 million from her own piggy bank, which ends up being $43.25 for each vote she got, which was 1.3 million fewer than Brown got. Brown’s spending totaled $36.43 million.

Even before being elected governor, Brown’s mantra seems to have been “do more with less,” which not coincidentally was his theme in last night’s State of the State address. Maybe that’s why he talked for only 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, as Brown talked austerity, citizen Whitman was giving her own speech at Chantilly Restaurant in Redwood City before a women’s business group, where dinner entrees include Cold Water Australian Lobster tail with sherry and tarragon, for $37 and Veal Sweetbreads sautéed demiglace with mushrooms for $27.
