Sunday Streets Gets Oakland Flair

Building on the popularity of San Francisco’s Sunday Streets events, during which bikers, hula hoopers and roller skaters have taken over thoroughfares from Third Street to the Great Highway – Oakland is launching its own car-free outdoor gathering and calling it Oaklavía.

The community group Walk Oakland Bike Oakland, which is behind the event, says “Oaklavía will take the concept of street festival to the next level,” offering planned activities from dance to bike repair to circus arts along the route.

The first Oaklavía will take place on Sunday, June 27, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Yes, that is the same day as San Francisco Pride – organizers are encouraging attendees to hit up both events.
