The president of San Francisco State University announced Monday that he will step down at the end of the school year, according to the school's student newspaper, The Golden Gate Xpress.

Robert Corrigan made the announcement at a faculty meeting, the paper reported:

"I want to go back to my research and get away from what’s happening,” said Corrigan. “I had to do what I had to do. Given that the [budget] situation is a multi-year problem, the university needs to have a president who will be around and I cannot say that I would be around enough to serve."

Corrigan has been president of the university since 1988.
