Bomb Squad Shuts Part of SF's Market Street

A section of Market Street in San Francisco was shut down Friday morning while the city’s bomb squad investigated a suspicious package, the Police Department’s Public Affairs Department said.

A passerby reported discovering a suitcase near the corner of Battery Street at about 8:30 a.m., the San Francisco Examiner reported.

Following an investigation, the suitcase did not appear to contain explosive material, the Examiner reported.

Muni bus services were being rerouted around the affected section of Market Street and trams were switching back in direction to avoid the area, spokesman Paul Rose said.

Market Street is San Francisco's main downtown thoroughfare.
