Salmon population slow recovers

The first full salmon fishing season since 2007 could be allowed off the California's coastline this year, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reported.

The fishing season could open during May, August and September.

“We’re going to have about as close to a real salmon fishing season as we can have anymore,” Dave Bitts, president of the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen’s Associations, who is attending a week-long Pacific Fishery Management Council meeting in Vancouver, told the newspaper. “For most of us that do this, this is what we live to do.”

To protect dwindling members of the salmon population, the commercial season was canceled in 2008 and 2009 and limited to nine days last year.
