Oakland City Attorney John Russo is one of three finalists for the position of Alameda city manager, according to the Oakland Tribune.

The Trib cited multiple unnamed sources in reporting that Russo had applied for the Alameda job after the recruitment period opened Feb. 1. It did not name the other two finalists, saying only that they included one man and one woman.

Last Tuesday, The Bay Citizen revealed that Russo was considering resigning from his post, after frequently clashing with Mayor Jean Quan.

Two days later, Quan told reporters at her weekly news conference she didn't think Oakland should have an elected city attorney

“We need to ask whether they are a third branch of government, or are they attorneys for the city,” she said.

If Russo does end up taking the job in Alameda, the Oakland City Council would pick a replacement to serve in his place until the next election, according to the Trib.

The Alameda city manager position became open in December when the City Council there voted to oust both the island's city manager and city attorney. The decision left Alameda without a permanent city manager, city attorney, police chief or fire chief.
