Oakland police officers began voting Tuesday on concessions that officials say could save the city $65 million over four years.

The Oakland Police Officer's Association also released more details about the deal struck between union and city officials that would take effect in July:

  • Officers will pay 9 percent toward their pensions
  • Retirement age will increase from 50 to 55
  • For new hires, pension payouts will be calculated on a three-year salary average, rather than the single-highest year
  • Entry-level pay will be reduced by 10 percent
  • Officers will delay previously negotiated cost-of-living increases until 2014 and early 2015
  • Officers will give up to two holidays per year through 2015

If officers vote in support of the concessions, the agreement guarantees no layoffs or furloughs until 2015. The agreement will last until June 30, 2015.

City Council members plan to discuss the budget negotiations at a 5:30 p.m. meeting Tuesday at City Hall.

The results of the OPOA's vote will be announced July 7.

This is awesome! I'll bet Oakland will be able to kick the bankruptcy can down the road by at least a couple more years!
