Oakland police Chief Anthony Batts will be making his case for help from federal authorities at a conference Tuesday at the Oakland Zoo.
The Oakland Gang Crime Summit, which begins with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in the Snow Building on Golf Links Road, will feature presentations from police units, nonprofits and violence prevention specialists about various aspects of violent crime in Oakland.
Following the layoffs of 80 police officers, the Oakland Police Department is looking for more bodies in its investigative units.
In attendance will be the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The department already participates in several federal task forces and receives help from the FBI and ATF.
Police spokeswoman Holly Joshi said the summit aimed to bring together federal agencies, service providers and the OPD “to talk about Oakland’s unique crime problem so everyone has a broad picture and an in-depth understanding of what we need. When they do agree to really invest in Oakland they’ll know what it is we uniquely have here.”
