GOP gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman was talking tough on illegal immigration in the lead up to the June 8 primary elections after being called soft by her opponent, Steve Poizner. That kind of stance has caused continuing hemorrhaging of Latino voters from the Republican Party across the country. But now that Whitman is the one to face Democrat Jerry Brown in the general election, she’s pivoting to capture some of the Latino voters whose support she could need to win, reports the Contra Costa Times today. The former eBay executive released two new ads aimed at Latinos, the newspaper says, which were broadcast on Spanish-language TV stations during World Cup matches.
Whitman has a long way to go in cultivating this segment of the electorate. A Public Policy Institute of California poll found that Latino support for Whitman in a match-up with Brown dropped from 35 percent to 26 percent from March to May—after she ratcheted up her rhetoric on immigration.
