California Lt. Gov. and former San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom made an appearance at Rochambeau Playground late Tuesday morning to announce Coca-Cola's $250,000 donation to the San Francisco Parks Trust. His suit was well-matched, and his hair well-slicked, per usual. Following the press conference, Newsom took a quick spin on a skateboard, and then a quick stumble — all while managing to stay on his feet. A valiant effort indeed:

I am neither a huge fan of or a hater of, Gavin Newsom, - nor can a even stand up on a skateboard - but is this really news Bay Citizen? After reading about this young intern reporter Stephanie Chong, it is my hope that she does not reduce herself to this kind of silly reporting in the future. Perhaps lessons learned early on under Bay Citizen's tutelage about what is really news can guide a fledgling journalist toward some caliber, sorely needed today, rather than putting any amount of energy, even five seconds, into covering someone not falling on a skateboard. I mean, seriously. Can we please teach our young people the difference between the inane instant gratification of the Facebook-Tweet-Blog-able moment and what is really relevant in the world? I actually laughed at the header of the entry - "Pulse of the Bay", "breaking news." Really?
