Muni Names Debra Johnson Interim CEO

Interim Muni CEO Debra Johnson
With embattled Muni CEO Nat Ford leaving for good in two days, much to the delight of long-suffering bus riders, Muni has appointed Debra Johnson as Interim CEO. Meanwhile Muni is taking applications for a permanent replacement for the job.

Johnson, 42, has worked for Muni since 2007 and she led contentious contract negotiations with the bus drivers union. Although she hammered out a deal with union leadership, the rank-and-file voted down the proposal and only accepted it once an arbitrator ordered them to.

Johnson said that she has a "working relationship" with the bus drivers and an "ear willing to listen." SFMTA board chair Tom Nolan said he thinks Johnson will be "well-received"

Union officials did not immediately return calls seeking comment, but we can imagine they're not thrilled.

Muni's number two Carter Rohan was supposed to step into the interim CEO role, but he also quit soon after the Ford's departure was announced. The announcement came out of the blue at an SFMTA board meeting this morning.

It should be required for MUNI personnel, including and especially the CEO (interim or permanent), to take MUNI daily to work. Ditto with the Mayor and BoS. Only then will we see real improvement in MUNI.

Hey b s -- Johnson was asked whether she takes public transit and she said that she regularly uses BART and Muni...we'll see.
