A new poll shows California voters are split on the new law requiring online retaliers to collect sales taxes from consumers.

Opponents of the so-called "Amazon tax" plan to collect signatures for a ballot initiative against the measure. The poll's director said the survey results portend a contentious fight.

“This could be one of the most expensive campaigns in California history, and neither side starts with a clear advantage,” said Dan Schnur, director of the USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times Poll and director of the Unruh Institute of Politics at USC.

The poll also found that many voters disapprove of the state budget approved last month, particularly the deep cuts to education that have triggered tuition increases at UC and CSU. But there is strong support for the vehicle registration fees included in the budget, according to a Los Angeles Times report on the poll.
