Don't Skateboard on Ganesha

Ganesha, the portly elephant-headed Hindu god, looked fit and slim on a new skateboard by Zazzle, Inc., a Redwood City-based company notorious for its misuse of images of Hindu deities on everything from T-shirts to key chains and clothing for pets. But this god is not for skateboarding.

Sunita Sohrabji, a reporter for India West, recently reported that the company has withdrawn the set of skateboards and pet T-shirts sporting multi-colored images of Hindu gods and goddesses.

India West noted that Rajan Zed, president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, issued a statement last month demanding that Zazzle stop manufacturing the skateboards and pet clothing.

“Hindu deities are meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines, not to be pushed around or rode around with one’s feet,” said Zed.

India deities appear on all kinds of products in India from matchboxes to butter. But in the West many Hindus have been up in arms about images of Hindu gods on toilet seats, flip flops and pale ale labels.

When the Goddess Lakshmi showed up on a Burger King Whopper, the Hindu American Foundation was furious.

But perhaps those Krishna mouse pads are okay.
