Two weeks after the last votes were counted, GOP candiate and attorney David Harmer has finally conceded to East Bay Rep. Jerry McNerney, bringing closure to the Bay Area's only unresolved congressional race.
Campaign finance statements show Harmer had raised more than $70,000 to finance a recount and possible court fight in the hotly contested race, but in an e-mail to supporters and the media Harmer said he had decided to throw in the towel despite continued concerns about “some aspects” of the voting and counting process, which he said would be outlined in a "future message."
"But the incumbent’s margin is large enough to make a recount unlikely to change the result," he said "and the precinct-level data do not display the sort of anomalies that would justify a challenge.”
The final, certified tally of votes by the California Secretary of State showed McNerney beating Harmer by 2,658 votes.
McNerney declared victory Nov. 10.
