It’s a really bad time to make a traditional Caesar salad with raw egg.
On Friday, yet another egg producer from Iowa issued a massive recall thanks to a large, national outbreak of salmonella, according to The New York Times. The new recall came from Hillandale Farms of Iowa. The eggs were sold in 14 states, including California.
Salmonella may cause symptoms such as fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. While most people recover within a week, some may become so sick that they require hospitalization, according to the California Department of Public Health. Infants, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are at highest risk of severe illness.
California has had several hundred confirmed cases of salmonella and expects to see more, CNN reported. But the state’s health department cannot confirm that they are all related to contaminated eggs. Santa Clara is among the hardest-hit counties in the state.
