Ramón Vargas Wannabes Wanted

The San Francisco Opera is holding auditions next Monday as it searches for three men to act as doubles for famed tenor Ramón Vargas in an upcoming production of Jules Massenet's Werther.

For those who have dreamed of appearing on the War Memorial Opera House stage but can't carry a tune, this may well be your big chance. The three men serving as Vargas's doubles will be what is known in opera lingo as "supernumeraries"--those who act in full costume and make-up in the opera, but who do not sing. Supernumeraries are not paid, but they do get to see a major opera production put together, and get to appear along with internationally acclaimed artists.

So if you look a bit like Vargas (pictured above) have dark hair (preferred but not required) and are no more than 5' 10" tall (a deal-breaker), head over to the Ballet Studio at the Opera House (301 Van Ness Avenue, at Grove Street) at 7pm next Monday, August 9.

Anyone, man or woman, interested in participating as a supernumerary in other SF Opera productions is welcome to come as well to be measured and photographed, according to SF Opera staffer April Busch. Busch asks that anyone planning to come call 415-551-6205 or send an e-mail to supers@SFOpera.com so the event can be staffed appropriately.
