Census: Marriages Lasting Longer

More than half of married couples (55 percent) have been married for at least 15 years, while 35 percent had reached their 25th anniversary, a slight increase since the last time the government crunched the data in 1996, according to a new report released Wednesday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The census said 49 percent of black women's first marriages ended in divorce -- the highest for any race -- followed by 41 percent for white women, 34 percent for Hispanic women, and 22 percent for Asian women.

The report also showed that Asian women were the most likely to enter into a racially mixed marriage. 23 percent of Asian women married outside their race, compared to just 5 percent of white women and 7 percent of black women, and 11 percent of Hispanic females, the census said.

The census found inter-racial marriages were more likely than same-race marriages to end in divorce.
