A young woman was struck and killed by a San Francisco Municipal Railway bus in the city's Castro District Friday afternoon. The collision was reported at 2:30 p.m. at 18th and Hartford streets, San Francisco Police said.

Police said the victim was between 25 and 30 years old. Two hours after the incident, her yellow-rimmed sunglasses, a smartphone with a pink case, and a black purse were still scattered underneath the bus.

According to SFPD Sgt. Michael Andraychak, the the woman was walking in the crosswalk and was "95 percent" of the way across Hartfod Street when the bus ran her over making a left turn. She died instantly, Andraychak said.

Andraychak said the driver was "distraught." A person that appeared to be the driver could be seen sitting in the back of a police car with a brown Muni jacket pulled over their head.

Police said they believe the driver stopped at the stop sign on 18th Street before making the left-hand turn onto Hartford. The bus was not a regular route and was headed to a nearby bus stop to supplement the busy F-line trolley. There were no passengers on board at the time.

The driver was cooperating with investigators at the scene and will be tested for drugs and alcohol, but police said there was no evidence that he was impaired.

Another MUNI fatality. Anytime a bus hits a pedestrian in a cross-walk, the bus is in the wrong. And what was he doing driving off-route. This is the same problem with the muderous UCSF shuttles. They are always going off route into neighborhoods and streets that aren't used to buses. Stay on your route!
