A 54-year-old woman was left in serious condition Monday after she was run over by a bus operated by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley police said.

According to police, the bus was moving westbound on Center Street when the driver made a right-hand turn onto Shattuck Avenue just as the woman and a friend were crossing the street. The bus struck and ran over the woman while her friend banged on the side of the bus with her hands to get the driver's attention.

Emergency workers extricated the woman from underneath the bus. She sustained serious injuries to her lower body and was taken to a local trauma center for treatment, where she remained Monday night. The accident remains under investigation.
