As the country continues to react to news of bin Laden's death, Bay Area law enforcement agencies are directing officers and residents to be "on alert" for anything suspicious.
All BART officers are patrolling today on "high alert," incuding the department's new Critical Asset Patrol Team, which has been trained in counter-terrorism. Security is about the same at San Francisco International Airport, although officers are supposed to be "extra vigilant" today. The Oakland Police Department, recently criticized for gathering intelligence on activist groups, has been grasping for news of organized responses, and say they've found none.
The San Francisco Police Department is coordinating information with the FBI. Officers are visiting religious institutions as a "precautionary measure," monitoring transit areas and keeping their eyes peeled for any demonstrations or rallies. They're directing residents to do the same.
"Be more aware of surroundings and things that could arise. Don't take things for granted," said SFPD spokesman Lt. Troy Dangerfield.
