According to the Chronicle and SF Weekly (which has been following the story since last night), the man who jumped to his death at a Swell Season show last night at Mountain Winery in the Saratoga hills has been identified. Michael Edward Pickels, 32, of San Jose attended the show — a folk duo of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova from the movie "Once" — with a friend, but left his belongings at his seat around 10 p.m.
Multiple concert-goers —many of whom wrote in to SF Weekly after the traumatic event — saw Pickels climb up and jump, falling 20-30 feet, perhaps through the lighting rigging, and land three feet away from lead singer Hansard.
One commenter named Paul Cox wrote at SF Weekly:
I can definitely relate to the witness who thought it was a dummy at first. That's how it looked to me -- specifically because the man appeared to tumble sideways, head over heels, away from the wall. With the outward thrust towards the crowd, he really did look like a dummy being thrown off of the roof.
He hit the stage with a massive thump, and for a moment, the entire venue was silent. I felt like my brain was stuck, trying to make sense of what I had just seen. The horror of the incident was made clear when Glen Hansard ran over to the man, knelt down and yelled at someone offstage, "Quickly!"
A doctor was brought onto the stage, but Pickels was pronounced dead at the scene. The show was immediately stopped, and the Swell Season posted this statement on their website:
"The band, crew and all involved with them are shocked and saddened by the death that occurred at last night’s show. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the deceased, his family and friends."
