The Weekend Menu: Free Beer, African Cooking, and Architecture

Bar Agricole
Bar Agricole
Free Beer Party

Friday, 8-11 pm, D-Structure, 520 Haight St., San Francisco

Now it just wouldn’t be a Weekend Menu (Culture Feed TM) without us dishing on how to snag something free. This weekend it’s a party sponsored by Scoutmob (the kinder, gentler Groupon?), with a live DJ and also free beer. You are welcome to show up with a few friends, grab brew, and seclude yourself in a corner to judge everyone else. Did we mention the beer is free? To get in, download the Scoutmob app on your smartphone here.

West African Cooking Class
Saturday, 2 pm, Macy’s Union Square, 170 O’Farrell, San Francisco

Why are we still surprised that some of this city’s coolest food events happen at a department store, in a part of town we would otherwise avoid like the plague? This time around, it’s a course on West African cooking from Chiefo Chukwudebea global roamer, fair trade advocate, and accomplished chef who will give lessons on exotic treats like Scotch Egg wrapped in house-seasoned sausage and breadcrumbs. Oh, and all proceeds benefit La Cocina (how can we hate you, Macy’s?!) Buy tickets here

Bar Agricole Design Tour
Saturday, 2-5 p.m., Tour starts at: Nikolas Weinstein Studios, 1649 Valencia Street, San Francisco

You don’t have to be a design wonk to enjoy this overview of James Beard Award-winning restaurant Bar Agricole (but it probably helps). The tour starts at Nikolas Weinstein Studios, where you’ll get the rundown on that floaty glass sculpture that hangs cloudlike above the dining area, before heading over to the restaurant for some more talky-talk with Joshua Aidlin, the restaurant’s architect, and Thaddeus Vogler, the owner. And of course, there will be tastings from Bar Agricole’s food and drink menu. Buy tickets here
