It's Tuesday, which means it's time for a SHORT BREAK! Check back on the second day of every week for another awesome short film and a quick chat with its director.
(Ed. note -- And check out Jon's hilarious work on TBC's film festival data app, which helps filmgoers choose what to see among the San Francisco International Film Festival's impressive schedule.)
You can direct your thanks to whichever cosmic power you prefer: Kismet. God. Ronald and Luana Zellner. But there's no disputing the fact that the Zellner Brothers were put on this Earth to do one thing: make films. The Austin-based siblings have written, directed, and starred in numerous award-winning shorts, the beautifully absurd "Fiddlestixx" web series, and the phenominal "Goliath," a feature about a man on a sacred quest (to find his cat). Today's short "Redemptitude" explores the complicated relationship between a lost soul and a preacher. In Australia. With a motorized wheelchair and a paintball gun. Just please watch it.
It is certainly worth pointing out that David and Nathan are being recognized at this year's San Francisco International Film Festival with a retrospective of their hilariously outre oeuvre. "From A to Zellner" is this Sunday night, April 24th, at 9:45pm in the Sundance Kabuki. It will feature not only a bunch of great films - including one that features a real life shark attack - but also the joy that is both Brothers in person, messing with each other (and us).
Check out the film and then scroll down for my email Q and A with David Zellner.
The Bay Citizen: Where did the inspiration for "Redemptitude" come from?
David Zellner: We'd long since been wanting to make a film in Australia with Australian talent and this seemed like the perfect opportunity.
TBC: What is it like working so closely with your brother? How do you split (or share) roles?
DZ: It's the only way we've worked so I don't know what to compare it to. We have very different personalities and strengths but similar sensibilities. I approach the material from more of a creative standpoint, Nathan from more of a technical, we meet in the middle and mix it all up.
TBC: What can we expect at your SFiFF event this Sunday?
DZ: A broad sampling of our short films as well as a special appearance by our grandfather, who has magical powers.
