Zog's Dogs, a hot dog stand at 1 Post Street, is no stranger to irreverence. They offer a “Prop 8” dog with two dogs nestled side by side in one bun and a veggie dog wrapped in bacon called the “Moral Conundrum.” For two years running now they’ve offered a Zog's Dogs Hot Dog Stand Fellowship that invites applicants to submit “creative proposals that reimagine the hot dog, the restaurant experience, and food in general.”
Last year’s winner, Paul Pescador, staged a kind of impromptu play. This year's winner was Leslie Henslee of the Richmond neighborhood’s Frankenart Mart, a quirky gallery/shop/performance space that calls itself a “conceptual art-in-practice store." Frankenart Mart is no stranger to the hot dog—they give away free ones once a month.
As this year’s Zog’s Dog fellow, the Frankenart Mart crew is whipping up free portraits in ketchup from noon to 2:30 p.m. outside the stand for anyone who wants one. A team of artists were stationed at a table doling out the “drawings” as subjects arrived. The artists squirted the ketchup and mustard straight out of plastic bottles and were surprisingly adept at rendering human faces in condiments.
How succsessful were their efforts? You be the judge.
The ketchup and mustard is infused with a preservative to ensure that the portrait lasts longer than a snack, and sure enough, it is rapidly hardening where it sits at my cubicle.
