Film Society Cinema to Open Doors with New Godard Film

The San Francisco Film Society revealed that its brand-new Film Society Cinema will open September 2 with a week-long run of French master Jean-Luc Godard's 'Film Socialisme'. The Cinema, part of a partnership with the New People Cinema announced in June will continue with a weekly schedule of "extraordinary cinema from around the world", as the press release puts it.

More exciting from a film-lover's point of view is the chance to see the latest from Godard.

"Film Socialisme" premiered in 2010 as part of the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival and has not shown in San Francisco yet. Consisting of three "movements" that add up to a challenging, fragmentary whole, the film was certainly the talk of the fest. In no small part, this was due to the diector's decision to offer English subtitles in a stilted pidgin he referred to as 'Navajo'.

This article by indieWire's Eric Kohn offers a fair assessment of Godard's suceses and failures while still asserting that his film "...deserves to be seen by those with even mild curiosity about its contents."
